 Advanced Course Syllabus

 Textbooks:
Introduction To The Human Body, The Essentials Of
Anatomy and Physiology by Gerard Tortora 
& The Merck Manual Of Medical Information  

Comprising 126 hours of tuition, completion qualifies a student to develop an herbal business, teach classes, author articles, apply therapeutic applications for clients, consult with clients on suspected or doctors diagnosis

Advanced Level—Third Trimester
July 16th -September 24th 2006
 95% attendance is required

Comprising 126 hours of tuition, completion qualifies a student to additionally assist with plant research projects, plan and care for medicinal gardens, perform therapeutic applications for clients, purchase for and maintain a clinical  pharmacy and serve in apprenticeship with an experienced Herbalist. A score of 90% or better in testing on the intermediate course work is required to enter this level of study. 

Advanced trimester of the course includes:

Botanical Pharmacy; advanced medicine making processes and procedures; practical knowledge and skills in making creating flower infused waters, localized soaks, root poultices, trans-dermal creams and packs, aromatherapy blends & ointments, nutritional blends and therapeutic incense.  Advanced level styles and traditions of formulating and formulation techniques.   Building a pharmacy, the sources and resources. Guidelines and skills for selecting and purchasing dried plants, extract tinctures  and other preparations. Creating and using batch codes and inventory control systems.

Materia Medicas; in depth discussion of plant potentials from research on the twenty-one plants of the advanced trimester. Tasting and experience of each plant. Observation of the relationship between plant chemical constituents, plant actions and health conditions. Using a Materia medica to stimulate further research. Independent Materia medica assignments and presentations.

Therapeutic Applications; Applications of herbal preparations and protocols for health concerns requiring advanced level knowledge. Adjunct healing: aromatherapy profiles of plants with applications and formulations. 

Human Anatomy and Physiology; Advanced level for the Herbalist.

Understanding Technical Terms; including advanced medicinal plant actions. Understanding usage of tonic and effector herbs. Defining plant chemical constituents.

Herbal Botany; lectures and plant identification walks with keys to plant families and wild plant community observations.

Wildcrafting; legalities, permits and conducting salvage operations. Harvesting, drying and storing the twenty-one plants of the advanced trimester.

Gardening; plant disease diagnostics, treatment and insect control. Use of mulch and compost, making of fertilizers. Independent medicinal garden plan assignments and presentations. Soil and growing requirements for the twenty-one plants of advanced trimester. Planning and planting a Scree garden.

History & Philosophy; Ancient and modern Adept Healers, Henwives and Herbalists. Gaelic Medicine’s philosophy of disease prevention, immunity and infection.
