With an ancient and strong herbal tradition and a diversity of herbs that grow as natives, Scotland and her rich ways can offer us a transferable formula for the practise of herbalism. Far from being quaint or anachronistic in nature, learning traditional herbalism has great implications for restoring and maintaining good health. The Academy of Scottish Herbalism (ASH) serves to make available in America and in Scotland, instruction on traditional Scottish Herbalism and healing practices. Herbalism is both chemistry and craft, which is best learned through observation of and guidance from a trained and experienced herbalist as well as from life experiences. By sharing techniques, knowledge, experiences and observations, and a passion for and an approach to herbalism whose time has come again, the courses, classes and seminars offered by ASH endeavor to educate, to build confidence and to inspire. They provide knowledge and skills needed for selfcare and family herbalism, as well as professional herbalism and a foundation in spirituality. ASH offers coursework that includes education in herbal medicine making techniques, the historical and current medicinal use of herbs, Celtic, Scottish and Pictish ethnobotany, esoteric herbal traditions, botany, wildcrafting and gardening, nutrition, cooking and healing lifestyles native to Scotland and her people. Academic and experiential guidance in herb use and plant lore, human anatomy and physiology, history, culture, myth, legends and ancient spirituality of the Celt and Pict are also part of the curriculum.
